One way to to Tackle your Fears- Get a Makeover

makeup gals

I just noticed that I look like I have long hair as Crystal’s long tresses are colored like mine! Ha Ha!

Ok, raise your hand if you get a little nervous when you walk by the make-up counter…

I always think I am the only one in the room who is not quite sure how to put on the shadow or line the lid.  But, I think, I am not alone.  I have now been twice to Sephora to do a little mini-eye makeover.  Once with my daughter-in-law and once with a friend.  It was super fun and a great way to tackle a little fear minion in me.

The gals at the store are super friendly and approachable and are great teachers.  Our teacher let us try the products, answered the million questions asked and even wrote down how she did it for me so I could go back over the notes later.  I know a little nerdy, but the first time, after I got home, slept and woke up, I had forgotten everything!  This second time around I came home prepared with my handy notes.

How does this help me tackle my fears?  Well, I see how fearful I get with makeup, I see how that bleeds into other areas- this lack of confidence.  The doubts and fears of an unsure spirit spill over into all areas.

At the makeup counter, I gained courage with each swish  of color and realized I am not the only one who doesn’t know how to tightline or use the brushy brush.  Just like in other areas…I am not the only one who doesn’t understand or know.  It’s ok not to know and to ask for help.

Something I struggle with is making mistakes. I learned that a  little makeup remover around the edges of my eyes cleans those mistakes up and I am good to go.  Or I make another stab at the lid with the lighter color and it is solved.  Just like in life.

I make mistakes or don’t really know what I am doing sometimes. I am reaching out to try new things and find it a little scary.  I make the mistake and  I offer my confession, receive God’s grace, and I am good to go.

When I swish on the color in life and make a little mistake, the Lord is there to clean up the messy edges.  He is ok with that. He knows the color is going to go on a little too strong sometimes. He is patient and a loving teacher.  Ahhhh.  Grace.  Love it.  Making the choice to go in and do the makeover has given me a little more oomph for the next time I face something I fear. I know that sounds silly, but it is true.I also love my new look!  What is your favorite place to learn new makeup tricks?  Or better, when was the last time you popped in for a makeover? Might be time to face those fears and try a new look.  No Fear.

Stop Wearing Pants That Don’t Fit

Stop wearing pants that don't fit

Right now, I want you to stop wearing those pants you don’t like.  You know the ones that are too tight, too loose, too short, too long.  The ones you have had for years, and they look like it, but you don’t have another pair of white pants, so you keep them and really don’t feel great in them.

I am writing this as I sit in my white pants.  The ones that are ages old and look it.  Not a cool kind of retro look old– a saggy baggy kind of old.  I feel a little frumpy in them.

While we are at it, let’s talk about bras, too.  I  bought new bras today.  Ugh-mo. Needed them.  Needed her to measure and tell me what my real bra size should be.  I was so offfffff!

Have you been measured and  bought a new bra recently?   If you can’t remember, then sistah, you need to go get measured and buy a new bra!  Stop wearing bras that don’t fit.

I thought of you when I was standing in the dressing room.  I know I needed a little push to buy the bra.  And the new pants.  Do YOU?  I am giving you permission to stop wearing pants you don’t like.  Or that shirt.  Or the dress that just doesn’t do it anymore. Or bras that are too old or don’t fit.

Get rid of those clothes in your closet and only keep what you love.  There are so many blog posts and articles about Capsule Closets or 10 Piece Wardrobes,  and I think there is something to these ideas.  Get rid of stuff in your closet that you just don’t like and is taking up room.   Ask a friend to help you.  Ask your husband.  Clean out and only wear what you LOVE.  Ahhh.

Let’s purge our closet at the start of summer and be free!  A clean closet will be a little Sursee for you and your summer.  Be brave and tell me how you did!

Saturday Sursee :: A Piece of Fashion Advice that Never Ages

This is one of the best pieces of fashion advice I have received in my life. Hope it helps you.

A friend told me this in college.  She said her mama told her, so now I am telling you.  From mama, to college roomie to Sursee Gal to you; here is a piece of advice that will change your world.  Not really, but it is good.

You Can Always afford a good haircut

Seriously,  a haircut is such a pick me up.  Don’t you love getting your hair washed….and snip, snipped?  Then blown dry to perfection.  I always feel like a million bucks when I leave the salon. This is therapy gals.  Tried and true. A confidence builder. And remember, be bold. Daring.  Your hair will grow back.

Is it time for you to get a hair cut?

So what is a piece of Fashion Advice, a Fashion Sursee, you have gleaned along the way?  Do tell.  I will be back with more nuggets I have gleaned, if you are interested…

Everybody Live Part 2 :: What Makes You Feel Alive?

Everybody Live 2

In Bye Bye Birdie, there is a scene where the Elvis- like character, Conrad Birdie, sings and dances to a song about living and all the cast does a fantastic song and dance number. Yay, baby. A friend recently reminded me of this scene and said she thinks about it when life is so daily and she wants to shout out, “Everybody Live!”

I think it goes along with the post I wrote about living and wondered if you needed Conrad to shout out to you, “Everybody Live!”

What helps you To Live…to live fully?  To live in the moment?  What makes you feel alive or gives you life or helps you to breathe or takes care of you or feeds your soul?

Isn’t it all the same thing?

No matter what we call it– let’s find it. Let’s find the things that make us come alive. Everybody Live!  Find that which breathes life into us or gives us breath or feeds our soul.

I think it looks different for all of us.  This idea used to stress me out.  I would think I should want to ‘x or y’, like my friend did.  I needed to copy her and do what she did to breathe, never stopping to think or ponder or ask the Lord, “What is it for me that fills my tanks?”

No more.  I am trying to see what it is that keeps me fresh, helps me come alive. Helps me to breathe.  I am asking Him what it might be. Show me, Lord.

Maybe it is music. Cranked up loud or played soothingly soft in the background.  Play it. Find it. Listen here, Listen there.  Let it help you expand and Live!

Maybe it is having a housekeeper once a week or once a month.  Pay them, enjoy the ability to have that in this season and don’t look back.

Maybe it is a walk in nature.Everybody Live

A haircut. A massage.  An early coffee date, alone.  An early coffee date with your sweetie.

Lunch with a friend.

A craft. A Work-Out and Sweating.

An art gallery stroll.

What Sursee is it that makes you say, “Yes. Yes, I love this.  I feel alive”?

Ask the Lord to help you figure this out, and then I encourage you my friend to: Do it, Experience it, Relish it and Tell us all about it.   It will encourage us all to Stop and Live when you Live.  Everybody Live!

Saturday Sursees :: Traveling Sursees

Ok, here is the scoop.  Here are two things that I took on my recent trip that were a win-win.

#1  These little puppies- Compression Socks

Travel sursees 3

They are not the most attractive thing, but I am telling you: they worked! Sursee Gal Honor.  I pulled them on once we were on the plane, then slipped on my slippers. Ahhhhh.  The hose kept me in comfort for the whole 15 hour flight. They really kept me from getting all swollen and fat footed and tired leggy. Travel Sursees 2

Sometimes on long flights, I get what I call the Jimmy-leg.  With these pretties, none of that.  Here I am modeling them after the 13 hour flight- look how happy my feet and legs look.  Found mine at CVS.

#2  A package of these-Cleansing Wipes

Travel Sursees 1

Photo made in action, on the plane, early in the morning after 15 hours of flying!!

A friend of mine, a Sursee-ette, told me about these.  She explained how on her long transatlantic flights, she brings these and wipes her face down, getting all the makeup off, then slathers her face with a thick moisturizer right before she settles in to sleep.  So, I did the same.  Felt great.

I also used a wipe at the end of the 15 hour flight and handed another one to Craig so we could wipe off all the trip gradu.  Felt so refreshing, and it was super easy to store in my bag.  These can also be used to wipe hands or clean a tray table.  Check.  Check.  A refreshening little mini spa for me.  Bought mine at Target.

What things Sursees have you found that help you when you travel? Do tell.

Sursee Saturday :: A Great Red Lipstick

a great red lipstick

I am always inspired by those little beauty articles that tell me what shoes to wear with skinny jeans or what  face powder, eye shadow or nail polish is awesome!  I like when someone else does the work. Today the inspiration is all about Red Lipstick.

A little back story.  I always think that the models who don red lipstick look so glam- but I am fearful of trying it. I also felt like finding a Red Lipstick was a rite of passage- a grown-up dealie.  But how to find one?

Sursee Gal did the work for you. I scoured the shelf at Target for about a minute and found you don’t have to spend a ton for this fun Sursee.  This here lipstick is a tiny investment that packs a big wallop.

I wanted to find the perfect red lipstick and really just accidentally found this one. I think I scored.  A beautiful red that looks fallish and rich. A Sursee for the lips.  If it is too dark, you could tone it down by blotting some off and adding lipgloss on top.  I have been having such fun wearing it and feeling so grown up!

The details: Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick/ 740 / Certainly Red

I found mine at Target.  Natch.

What are your thoughts about RED lipstick?  Is it for you or not?  Do tell.

Happy Sursee Saturday!

Sursee Saturday :: Wearing Scarves and Long Necklaces

Ok,  I admit, you might already know this fact that I am about to share, but I feel compelled to tell you about a new fashion tip I recently learned.  It’s all about the scarf and the necklace and how you can wear them together.  What? Yes- it is true.  Tell me that I am not the last person to learn this?!

Wearing necklaces and scarves

If I wore a scarf, I never really thought about adding a necklace under it like this.  I think it looks awesome and love how the detail of the necklace peeks out from under the scarf.  I like the layered beauty and the Sursee of the longer necklace getting to shine under the scarf.  A new way to think about wearing scarves.  I like that.

Hope this isn’t a lame-sauce Sursee and that someone out there is thinking, “Super cool! I never thought of that.”  If that is true, then that is a Sursee for me!

So today, go layer a scarf and a longer necklace.  Have you learned any fashion tips lately that made you think about something in a new way?  Do tell.

Radiant Orchid. Be the Word.

Radiant OrchidRadiant Orchid is the Pantone color of the Year for 2014.  Listen to what they say about this color:

“Expressive, exotic Radiant Orchid blooms with confidence and warmth”

                                                  “a captivating, magical, enigmatic purple”

“An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society.”

“An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.”

Every year Pantone picks the Color for the Year, and I love seeing what it is.  Last year it was….

11262012_cotyslideshow_02

Emerald!

Before that, it was Tangerine Tango and  before that-Honeysuckle and then-Turquoise-all such yummy shades.

Here is what Pantone says about how they choose the color each year:

The color of the year selection requires careful consideration and, to arrive at the selection, Pantone quite literally combs the world looking for color influences. This can include the entertainment industry and films that are in production, traveling art collections, hot new artists, popular travel destinations and other socio-economic conditions. Influences may also stem from technology, availability of new textures and effects that impact color, and even upcoming sports events that capture worldwide attention.

OK, so that is the job that I want!  Combing the world for the perfect color.  Traveling and seeing what is going to be the influential shade.  Talking, observing, dreaming about what color will inspire millions….  How fun is that?  Sign me up, today.

So what should you expect this year?  Radiant Orchid will be on the fashion runway and on your jewelry.  Your nails and lips will reflect its luxurious sheen.  Clothing and pillows and accent pieces will all be donning this loverly color.  Here is an example:

radiant orchid converse

Radiant Orchid Converse Tennis Shoes.  Wowzah!

Saw these back in December when I first read about the Pantone Color and had to have these puppies.  The Bear bought them for me for Christmas and they make me HaPpY when I put them on in the morning.  Happy Feet is good.

So what else does this mean for us?  I say enjoy this color pop!  Find a way to use Radiant Orchid and tell me how you pulled it in or put it on.

The other thing I have been thinking about is the actual word Radiant – love this word!  I am thinking we need to be the word.  Live this word.  If I hadn’t already picked my word for 2014, this would be it.

RADIANT. Captivating.  Confident.  Charming. Creative.  Original.  Are not those all words we would like used to describe us?

How do we do this?  I think it starts with our minds and what we think about.  God’s word and His ways.  Radiant.

It is what we listen to- read-watch on TV.  You know.  All that stuff.  If we want to be Radiant, we have to ingest it.  Think about Moses in the Old Testament.  It says that his face shone after spending time with God:

It came about when Moses was coming down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the testimony were in Moses’ hand as he was coming down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because of his speaking with Him.  Exodus 34:29

Radiant.

And if you will permit me, I think the Lord still wants His light to shine in us and make us radiant -as daughters of the King.  It says here in II Corinthians 4:5,6:

For we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants for Jesus’ sake.  For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

When we belong to Him, we are filled with His light and shine His glory on others.  Our Radiance comes from His Holy Spirit living in us.  Not from us. From Him.  And spending time with Him.

So let’s put our Radiant Orchid on the outside and the Radiant Light of His spirit on the inside and  go color our world. Enjoy this SURSEE of a color inside and out.

Empty Nester Fashion

Ok, so y’all have to check out these:

These boots were made for walking!

Hello, beautiful and fun boots.  These are my Empty Nester Boots.  Been looking at these for awhile.  Ever since I saw some in Santa Fe many years back.  Found some in Bastrop, and they make me happy!  Thought these were going to be my Christmas, but the Bear said these were my EMPTY NESTER SURSEE!  Woo-Hoo!

Just thought you might like to see what an Empty Nester wears.
When I put them on, I have to smile.  How can you not smile when your toadies are wrapped with floral greatness?
What fashion item is your SURSEE that makes you smile? Do tell.

Stitch Fix My Way

I know you have heard about Stitch Fix…this super fun way to get some help shopping and making decisions and getting fashionable.  All at the same time.

I read about Stitch Fix the first time here.  I started telling everyone else about it, but actually have not tried it out myself.  I think partly because I like- TRUE CONFESSIONS TIME HERE-  shopping.  OK, I said it.  Now you know.

Anyhoo…a group of gals were talking the other night at Creative Night, and one friend wanted to try it, but she said she needed help making decisions .  So one gal said we should Stitch Fix her.

So, I, being the helper that I am, volunteered to stitch fix her.

Ha!  I am pretty indecisive and not sure I have the best fashion sense,  but I do love to help people and I do love to shop, so we made a date and met.

Now, if I was a truly professh blogger, I would have pictures to insert HERE.

And Here.

But, I am not a professh blogger, and I don’t have any pictures,  so you will have to use your imagination.   We met at Francesca’s  and had a ball.

Francesca’s has loads of necklaces, earrings, bracelets, scarves and racks of cute dresses and tops. A veritable candy shop for clothes and accessories.

My friend tried on several outfits and looked amazing in her long chevron-striped maxi- “You look like a Grecian Goddess!” I exclaimed.

I picked out a super fun belt.  She wasn’t sure so I made her put it on. Belissimo!  She smiled.  I think she liked it.  Stitch Fix is going well. Friend is looking good. A cute top. Maybe this headband?  Oh, look at this cute orange date purse…

“Here let me hang that up for you.”  Who remembers shopping with your mom and her job was to hang the garments back on the hangers?  Well, that was part of my job, too.

“I’m not sure about that.”
 “Just try it on…”
 “Love it”
“You need a POP of color for your necklace”
“I want to be safe”
“No, we are not going to be safe.  We are going to be FuN!,  and you will smile when you wear this.”
“How do I wear this?  Where else can I wear this? “

This is what friends do for each other.

I have been on the other side of these questions many times, and it so helps to have another opinion or a friend’s thoughts as you are perusing the strands of necklaces or the spinning racks of earrings.  I can never decide.

So, today, I was the decisive one.  Helping my friend figure out what she LoVeD!  And she did have ideas and thoughts about what she liked, and they were good ideas.  She just needed someone to help push her over the line.

I was the helper today, and it felt good,  Hopefully, she will turn around and help someone else have confidence and learn they have what it takes inside of them.

Sometimes it just takes the Stitch Fix Friend to help you know~ you have what it takes!
What a great SURSEE~

Next up, Closet Clean-Out…stay tuned…
