Rest and Receive: Living a life that is full

rest-and-receive

Our theme for Advent at church has been Rest and Receive. Ahhh…

It even sounds like what it means.  Ressst.  And Receive.

I like that it is not only resting- stopping, listening, and slowing down, but also receiving-opening up to the Lord, filling up with Him and saying no to me and yes to Him.

This is what I have been thinking about these past few weeks, and it makes me a little sad-sad to turn the calendar after Advent and Christmas  and move on from #RestandReceive, so I am not going to do that.

I am making 2017 the year of Resting and Receiving. I am in a life stage where I need both, not one or the other, but both.  I think a bunch of y’all are also in that stage so would you like to join me and make Rest and Reality a practice we use to open up and change and yet do it all with a restful heart?  No hustle here, y’all.  No hurry next year.  Just Rest. Then Receive.  I even like the order. I have to Rest…then I receive.

What do you need to rest from or in this week and on into next year?  I can think of so many things where I need Rest- my schedule, my thinking,  my future.  How about you?  Where do you feel the Lord calling you to  slow down and Rrrrrreesssst. How are you going to do this? What will it look like for you?

For me resting can look like going to bed early or choosing not to do one more thing.  Or it can look like putting my feet up and reading a good book or not comparing.  Can you think about that today? What might it look like, today, to rest?  I would love to hear your thoughts.

Then we need to Receive.  What does that look like for me? I think it sometimes looks like believing, really believing, a truth I read in scripture.  Like this one,

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. I Peter 2:9

I need to receive this truth that I am all these things because He made me these things.  It is nothing I have done.  You are these things too, if you have believed in Jesus and the payment He made for you on the cross.  Receive. Rest and Receive.

We are Chosen.

A royal priesthood.

A holy nation.

A special possession.

Called out of darkness into wonderful light.

Man, I could meditate on these truths for years if I would Receive them and believe them.  I think that will come out of the Resting.

So today, when we only have a few more sleeps before Christmas, where can you choose to Rest and Receive?  It is now that we choose this and believe that He will be faithful and good, like He was the first Christmas when He sent His only son as a baby, born in a manger.  Alleluia!

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest heaven,

and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Luke 2:13,14
