A Few Ideas for How to Mentor

Mentoring Matters A Road Map for Mentoring

Mentoring Matters A Road Map for Mentoring

I am passionate about mentoring.  I believe we should all be involved in mentoring and I enjoy encouraging others to participate in this biblical mandate.  Today, I want to share with you what it looked like this week for me to mentor and just lay out for you what I do with the Moms I meet with on Monday nights.  Here are a few details.I meet with a group of women two times a month- the second and fourth Mondays.  We meet from 7:00 pm till around 9:00 pm.  I serve a snicky- snack, and we talk briefly; then we get down to business.  We talk about the book we are reading  and share our thoughts and questions.  Everyone participates- I just keep plowing through the chapter and try to finish on time.   We always end with prayer.  I pass around index cards, and we write our prayers out and then pass our card to the right.  Then we  pray for each other.  We try to spend the time praying and not sharing what we need prayer for.  Most nights we end on time.  Some gals might have to leave earlier than others.  No problem.  I hope that helps you to get a picture in your mind what is going on over here.  Very simple.  Very real.We have read several different books and  done different studies, and right now we are reading through an old Linda Dillow book, Satisfy My Thirsty Soul.  It is going to be good for our souls to study this book and learn more about worship and what it looks like.  One take home from this week is this:

Worship is the path to experiencing the presence of God, the way to face-to-face intimacy.  Linda Dillow

Another facet of what we do is memorize scripture because hiding His word in our hearts is important and this hiding will change us from the inside out, which is what we need.  This week we challenged each other to memorize Psalm 16:11

You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy;In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.  Psalm 16:11

Do I really believe what this verse is saying? Is that the way I am living? These are questions we asked.  We are real and honest and none of us have it all together.  Our little Mom Heart study is a great time of encouragement for me and for the gals.  I try to make it a safe place to ask those hard questions. So that is a little picture of what it looks like with my Mom Hearts group.  Mentoring is not rocket science and probably most of you all are doing it out there with someone.

Mentoring is all about just taking the next step and being available.

I hesitated to tell you the details of what I do because I want you to mentor the way God leads you.  But, I also know that sometimes, it is helpful to see how others do it.

So, the Sursee for today is that mentoring can look like what you want it to look like.  It is all about listening to the Lord and hearing what He has for you.

Freedom.   Mentoring can be a group time or a one on one meeting.  A long-distance phone call or an early morning coffee at Starbucks.  I will share from time to time what I do when I mentor to encourage you that it is not  hard and that you can do it.  I would love to hear how you are mentoring.  It sharpens me and gives me new ideas.  Do tell in the comments and mentor me!
